Having just indulged in over-priced tea and cake at Betty’s Tea Shop, I took a walk down The Grove, Ilkley. It occurred to me that Ilkley is one of the few places where cars are still welcome in a West Yorkshire town centre. There is a steady stream of them up and down The Grove, all moving at moderate crawl.
When I was a kid, growing up in Blackburn, we’d often park the car next to the shops, and take the string bag to a succession of bakers, butchers, grocers and hardware shops. Multi-storey car parks and “super-markets” were still the stuff of science fiction. Mind you, I also remember my dad driving us down the M6 motorway, and the nearest car being 100 yards in front.
