Yorkshire is positively coming down with desirable residences, like this old barn near Skipton, seen from the Leeds–Liverpool canal. You can’t go anywhere without tripping over a stone barn or a dry stone wall. In fact, there’s so much Yorkshire Stone about, I wonder what it all looked like before they dug it up. Were the hills bigger? Were there lots of boulders lying around everywhere?
No doubt I will miss this aspect of Yorkshire landscape, when I eventually leave what the locals humbly call God’s Own County. Do you think God is a Yorkshireman? Do you think God created Yorkshiremen in his own image? Do you think God likes a bargain? Who am I to question the mysterious ways of the Lord.
