Although brimming full with historic landmarks and charismatic natives, Rome has its fair share of urban decay too. I was struck by the amount of graffiti on the walls, and litter in the streets, as well as people who seemed to have nowhere to go. This photograph was taken in the district of Termini, not far from Rome’s railway station. The grime didn’t detract from my visit, which included imperial ancient Rome, monuments to unification and Italian prosperity, art galleries, Baroque fountains, and the obligatory visit to the Vatican city-state. Rome has a much more gritty down-to-earth feel than its northern Italian city counterparts.
