Horse racing and racehorse training are very much a part of Irish culture. In Rathmullan, County Donegal, in the North West corner of Ireland, you see racehorses training on the long beaches of Lough Swilly because the sand has the perfect texture, and it’s usually too bloody cold to sunbathe, so there are no human obstacles.
Training on the sand and in the sea is considered an essential part of producing great Irish racehorses. By all account, this policy works. And, despite the amount of time these guys spend on the beach, they don’t seem to have much of a tan.
