I visited Chatsworth House, near Bakewell in Derbyshire, to see some large-scale sculptures which were being auctioned by Sotheby’s. Unfortunately, it was too late to see Planet by Marc Quinn, as it had already been moved. It was being readied for despatch to some ostentatious mansion somewhere, presumably so the new owner can show off during garden party canapés.
It was quite a task to get it out of the grounds, with several men, a flat-bed lorry, and a crane required to levitate the sculpture over fences and hedges. If you think a huge alabaster floating baby is a strange sight, you’d be almost right. It was even more surreal to watch a giant bubble-wrapped infant being dumped onto a trailer in front of nonchalant tourists.
