Lake Kournas is a beautifully clear freshwater lake in Crete. It is surrounded by the region’s distinctive steep-sloped mountains. I first went to Kournas in 1991, when there was a single taverna at the water’s edge. Nowadays, the same shore is littered with bars, shops, tavernas and cars.
